Famously (history tells us) the Hawkhurst Gang used connecting underground secret passageways to carry out their notorious ways. Established in the 12th century, The Mermaid Inn in the charming and aptly named Mermaid Street and historical landmark Ye Olde Bell Inn are connected to each other by tunnels and believed to have been regularly used by smugglers.
